Ruby is a Brooklyn based artist, living and working between New York and London, her hometown. Ruby’s 6 year career in interior design has informed a style that encompasses space, depth and texture in her three dimensional collages.
Ruby’s strong sense of design makes her work both charming and intriguing. She uses a vast array of elements and materials in the comparatively small space of her collages to create miniature entryways into other worlds.
Ruby frames her collages, making the display of the artwork a part of the piece itself. This offers an invitation to peer behind the glaze at the intricate and delicate compositions and find out to what is happening within. Ruby has likened her works to living spaces in their combinations of intention and meaning with the strikingly decorative and ornamental.
Ruby’s latest collection ‘Alchemy and Mysticism’ explores the ancient practice of Alchemy. Colourful and textured miniature realms sit inside architectural structures that, in their crisp architectural precision, pay homage to a practice that was once the pinnacle of advancement and discovery.
Alchemy & Mysticism
Within these delicately constructed tributes to classical architecture, Ruby uses ethereal imagery to explore the evolution of Alchemy. What was once the centre of scientific practice now predominantly evokes ideas of magic, healing and mystique.
In the confines of her collages Ruby makes space for both aspects of Alchemy, playfully and beautifully combining bespoke handmade papers and glazed porcelain talismans. For this series Ruby has framed the works in clear perspex boxes.
These boxes hang like small vitrines, as you can see in the images below, making you want to step closer, to examine the detail and to discover the connections and intricacies housed within. Each of the three dimensional collages captures the imagination and is titled with ceramic bunting flags, Ruby’s signature feature.
